From B.C. to present, and throughout the church year (Advent to End Times), God’s people have listened to Isaiah’s scroll being read in worship. Why? Because it is Isaiah the prophet who foretold the virgin birth of our advent King (ch. 7). In our Christmas celebration, the titles of Jesus (ch. 9) roll off our tongues as we hear Handel’s Messiah float through our minds. The recurring Servant-songs (Ch. 42,49, etc) describing our Lord Jesus’ life and ministry bring detail and insight into God’s salvation plan. It is Isaiah the prophet who walks us to the scenic summit of Mt. Calvary to show us the Lenten picture of our Suffering Servant, carrying our sins to the cross. Isaiah takes us to Good Friday and to Jesus’ death, burial and resurrection (ch. 53). The mighty seer states clearly our Lord’s victory over death and the grave, proclaiming the new life and joy we have in him (ch. 25, 53)! This prophet of old spells out for us the day of wrath (ch.66) and judgment and the Lord’s glorious reign in the church triumphant (ch.54, 35). These are just a few highlights!
The Book of Isaiah has been described by some as the 5th gospel due to its rich and Christ-centered message! Its 66 chapters serve as a sort of bible within the Bible, pouring forth law and gospel.
